According to legend, the British Prime Minister Earl Grey II saved the young son of a Chinese Mandarin from drowning or the son of an Indian Rajah from a tiger, depending on the storyteller. In gratitude, the father presented him with tea flavored with oil of bergamot, extracted from the rind of bergamot oranges. The bergamot orange, which is green in color and shaped like a pear, is almost exclusively grown in Italy. This essential flavoring is what makes Earl Grey tea so special.
